Land Rover battery replacement in Al Taawun
A Land Rover takes a large AGM battery, usually 80 to 95Ah, and many models add a small auxiliary battery for start-stop. Most have it under a cover at the back of the engine bay. A technician can replace it in your Al Taawun parking bay and reset the battery monitoring system with a diagnostic tool, which the car needs after every change.

Where the battery sits in a Land Rover
On the Discovery 4, LR4 and Discovery 5 the battery sits at the back of the engine bay under a plastic cover, with the auxiliary under a matching cover on the opposite side where one is fitted. Freelander 2 and Discovery Sport keep theirs under a cover near the bulkhead too. The classic Defender hides it under the front seat box. These bonnets are tall and open high, so a basement with low pipes can be awkward, and the covers add time. Leave about a metre clear in front of the car where the bay allows.
What we watch for when fitting a Land Rover battery
- Jump leads and chargers go on the earth stud, never the negative battery post, so the monitoring module can count the charge going in.
- After fitting, the battery monitoring system is reset with a diagnostic tool. Without it the car may keep start-stop disabled and carry on showing low-battery warnings.
- Main and auxiliary batteries are tested separately. A failed auxiliary alone can bring up start-stop and charging messages while the main battery is healthy.
- Windows are reset after reconnection by running each one fully down and up, the clock is set again, and low-voltage fault codes stored by the suspension and brake modules are cleared.
Land Rover battery sizes and types
The usual main battery across the Discovery 4, LR4 and Discovery 5 is a 90 to 95Ah AGM in the H8 case. Discovery Sport and Freelander 2 generally take an 80Ah H7, as AGM on start-stop versions and sometimes flooded on older petrol cars. The new Defender uses a large AGM as well. Auxiliary batteries are much smaller and differ by model and year, so they are matched to the part fitted. If a previous owner installed the wrong type, the technician points it out before replacing like for like.

Land Rover models we replace batteries for
Tap a model for its battery type, where it sits and what the swap involves.
Land Rover DefenderThe new Defender takes a large AGM battery and needs a monitoring reset after fitting. The classic Defender is a different job entirely, with its battery under the front seat box, so say which one you have.
Land Rover Discovery SportThe Discovery Sport usually runs an 80Ah AGM under a cover in the engine bay, plus an auxiliary battery on start-stop versions. Trim has to come off to reach it, so it takes longer than its size suggests.
Land Rover Discovery 5A Discovery 5 normally takes a 90 to 95Ah AGM at the rear of the engine bay. It carries a lot of electronics, and one used only for short trips shows low-battery messages well before the battery is truly worn out.
Land Rover Discovery 4The Discovery 4 uses a 90 to 95Ah AGM under a cover on one side of the engine bay, and start-stop versions have a small auxiliary battery under the cover opposite. Both are tested before either is replaced.
Land Rover LR4LR4 is the name the Discovery 4 carried in some markets, so the battery is the same 90 to 95Ah AGM under the engine-bay cover. If a flooded battery was fitted at some point, it is put right with AGM.
Land Rover Freelander 2The Freelander 2 takes an 80Ah class battery under a plastic cover near the bulkhead. Petrol cars without start-stop can use a flooded battery, later versions with it need AGM, and the monitoring reset applies to both.
How the battery and charging system work on a Land Rover
Land Rovers carry more control units than almost anything else on the road: air suspension, terrain response, cameras, powered everything. Many of those stay half awake after the car is locked, and the battery pays for it. A monitoring module on the negative terminal watches the charge and switches features off in stages as it drops. Start-stop models split the work between a main AGM battery and a smaller auxiliary one that holds the electronics steady while the engine restarts. A new battery has to be announced to the system with a diagnostic tool.
Signs a Land Rover battery is on its way out
- 'Low battery, please start engine' on the screen after a few minutes with the ignition on.
- A string of unrelated warnings at start-up, such as suspension, HDC or parking brake faults, that clear once the engine has run.
- Start-stop no longer shuts the engine off, and the infotainment turns itself off quickly when parked.
Land Rover battery help around Al Taawun
Around Al Taawun a Land Rover is usually a family's larger car, used for the short evening run to Al Majaz Waterfront or Al Qasba and parked in a podium bay the rest of the time. That is the worst routine it could have. The drive is too short to replace what the starter and the standby electronics took, and by the third or fourth day a warning appears on the screen. Sharjah heat then finishes what the short trips started. Having the battery tested twice a year, in the bay, catches it before the car refuses to start.
Land Rover battery replacement: FAQs
Why does my Discovery say 'Low battery, please start engine'?
The monitoring system has seen the battery's charge fall below its threshold with the engine off. On a healthy battery that takes a long while; if it appears within minutes, the battery is weak or has not been getting enough charge from short trips. A test shows which, and a jump start alone will not cure a worn battery.
Start-stop has stopped working on my Discovery Sport. Is the battery failing?
Often, yes. The car disables start-stop first when either the main or the auxiliary battery drops below par, long before it struggles to crank. Both batteries are tested on site, and replacing the weak one followed by a monitoring reset normally brings start-stop back.
Why do Land Rover batteries seem to wear out faster than other cars?
The cars draw more power while parked than most, and they are often used for short trips that never refill the battery. Add Sharjah's heat and two to three years is a normal life. The correct AGM battery, a proper reset after fitting and an occasional longer drive make a real difference.
Does the Discovery 4 really have two batteries?
Versions with start-stop do. The main AGM battery starts the engine and a small auxiliary battery keeps the electronics supplied during each restart. Earlier cars without start-stop have only the main one, so the technician checks under both covers before quoting.
