Tesla battery replacement in Al Taawun

A Tesla has a 12V low-voltage battery beside its main pack, and that battery is the only one we handle. Older Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y cars use a 12V lead-acid or AGM unit that can be changed where the car is parked in Al Taawun. Newer cars use a lithium-ion low-voltage battery, a Tesla service part, so we test, advise and arrange recovery.

How the battery and charging system work on a Tesla

Every Tesla runs its locks, screens, windows, computers and the contactors that connect the main pack from a low-voltage battery. The main pack keeps it topped up through a DC-DC converter, so there is no alternator and no starter motor. On cars built before roughly 2021 for Model S and Model X, and before about 2022 for Model 3 and Model Y, that battery is a 12V lead-acid or AGM type. Later cars moved to a small lithium-ion unit that sits on Tesla's own parts list. We never open or work on the high-voltage pack.

Signs a Tesla battery is on its way out

  • A message on the screen saying the 12V or low-voltage battery needs replacing soon. Treat it as days of warning, not months.
  • The car does not wake when you approach, the door handles stay dead and the app shows the car as offline.
  • The screen restarts, windows fail to drop when a door opens, or the car refuses to go into Drive although the main pack shows plenty of range.

Where the battery sits in a Tesla

The low-voltage battery sits at the front, under the plastic trim at the back of the front trunk near the base of the windscreen. With a dead 12V the front trunk will not open from the screen or the app. On Model 3 and Model Y two wires behind the tow-eye cover in the front bumper take a small external supply to pop the latch; older Model S and Model X usually have manual release cables. It is all done from the nose of the car, so standing room at the front of the bay is enough.

What we watch for when fitting a Tesla battery

  • The car is powered off from the touchscreen before the 12V terminal is touched, and a window is left slightly open because frameless door glass cannot drop without low-voltage power.
  • On lead-acid Model 3 and Model Y cars the vent hose has to be clipped back onto the new battery, or gas vents under the trim instead of outside the car.
  • Running jump leads from a Tesla to another car is a bad idea: its low-voltage system is not built to supply starter current to a petrol engine.
  • After a new 12V battery the warning on the screen usually clears by itself once the car has slept and woken. If it stays, Tesla service can clear it.

Tesla battery sizes and types

Lead-acid Model 3 and Model Y cars usually carry a compact 45 Ah battery in the Japanese B24 case size, vented through a small hose. Older Model S and Model X cars use a small deep-cycle AGM, usually somewhere between 33 and 45 Ah depending on the year. These are low-capacity batteries because nothing has to crank an engine. The technician reads the label on the battery in the car before fitting anything, since Tesla changed suppliers and sizes over the years. Cars with the lithium-ion low-voltage battery have no aftermarket equivalent we would fit.

Tesla battery help around Al Taawun

A Tesla that commutes to Dubai along Al Ittihad Road usually spends the night in an Al Taawun tower basement. A dead low-voltage battery down there is awkward: a Tesla that will not wake cannot be put into Transport Mode or rolled out of its bay, and a flatbed will not fit down many basement ramps. Supporting the 12V system is usually enough to wake the car, so it can be moved to where a recovery truck can load it, or simply driven once a lead-acid battery has been changed.

Tesla battery replacement: FAQs

Can you jump start a Tesla that will not wake up?

Not in the way a petrol car is jump started, because there is no starter motor to turn. What we do is support the 12V system with an external supply so the computers wake and the contactors close. If the low-voltage battery is still healthy the car then looks after itself; if it is finished, it needs replacing.

How do I know whether my Tesla has the lead-acid or the lithium-ion low-voltage battery?

The build date is the first clue: Model S and Model X from the 2021 refresh, and Model 3 and Model Y from about 2022, usually have lithium-ion. The sure way is to read the label on the battery under the front trunk trim, which the technician does during the free test.

Do you replace or repair the main Tesla battery pack?

No. We only work on the 12V low-voltage side, and the high-voltage pack stays with Tesla service. If the test points to a fault beyond the low-voltage battery, we tell you and can arrange recovery to a service centre.

Will my Tesla lose its settings or range when the 12V battery is disconnected?

No, profiles and settings are kept by the car and come back once it wakes. The main pack is not touched, so the range reading is unchanged. Expect to wait a minute or two while the screen restarts.
