Mazda battery replacement in Al Taawun

Mazda models with i-stop, which covers most recent Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, CX-30 and CX-9 cars, take a start-stop battery, usually the Japanese Q-85 size in EFB. Older or non i-stop cars take a standard 55D23L or similar. The battery is under the bonnet and can be changed at your parking spot in Al Taawun, with the i-stop reset done before the technician leaves.

Mazda battery sizes and types

Japanese start-stop batteries carry their own codes. Q-85 is the common Mazda fitment: an EFB in the D23L case, found on most i-stop Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5 and CX-30 cars. S-95, in the longer D26L case, turns up on some larger engines. Cars without i-stop use ordinary JIS sizes, usually 55D23L or 75D23L, and older small-engine Mazda3 versions sometimes 46B24L. The code is printed on top of the battery. If the label has faded, the technician measures the case and reads the chassis number instead.

Where the battery sits in a Mazda

Mazda keeps the battery at the front left of the engine bay, inside a plastic box with a lid and, on Skyactiv cars, a section of intake ducting clipped over it. The lid and duct come off by hand, then the clamp bar across the top is undone. Because the engine computer sits close to the battery on several models, tools are kept well clear of its connector. Access is from the front and one side, so a nose-in basement bay works, and so does a parallel street space.

How the battery and charging system work on a Mazda

Skyactiv Mazdas watch their battery closely. A current sensor on the negative terminal feeds the engine computer, which decides when i-stop may switch the engine off and how hard the alternator charges. Some Mazda6 and Mazda3 versions add i-ELOOP, a capacitor that stores braking energy; it is a separate part that we leave alone. The battery itself is a Japanese start-stop type, built to accept charge quickly. A conventional battery fitted in its place often ends with i-stop refusing to work and its amber light flashing.

Signs a Mazda battery is on its way out

  • The i-stop indicator turns amber, or the system simply stops shutting the engine off at lights, long before starting feels weak.
  • A slower, heavier-sounding crank first thing in the morning that comes back to normal on the second start of the day.
  • The Mazda Connect screen freezes or restarts while the engine is cranking.

Mazda battery help around Al Taawun

A Mazda leaving Al Taawun for Dubai between 7 and 9am joins the queue at Al Taawun roundabout and then crawls along Al Ittihad Road. In that traffic i-stop may cut and restart the engine many times before the border, each restart drawing on the battery while the AC fan, lights and screen keep running. The car copes when the battery is an EFB in good health. Once it ages, i-stop quietly drops out to protect it, which is why the first sign on a commuter's Mazda is usually that light and not a failed start.

What we watch for when fitting a Mazda battery

  • After a battery change the i-stop light can flash amber until the battery management reset is carried out. We do that reset at the car and check that the light has gone out.
  • The current sensor on the negative terminal stays with the car's cable. The clamp is loosened at the post and the sensor plug is never tugged.
  • Mazda hold-down bars are light. Overtightening can crack the battery lid, so the nuts are nipped up, not forced.
  • One-touch windows need resetting after a disconnect, which is done by holding each switch at the top for a few seconds.

Mazda battery replacement: FAQs

Why is the i-stop light flashing amber on my Mazda?

A flashing amber i-stop light means the system has found a fault or the battery data needs resetting, and it is common after a battery has run low or been changed without the reset. We test the battery, carry out the reset and check for stored codes. If the light stays on with a healthy battery, the car needs a workshop diagnosis, which we can arrange.

What does Q-85 mean on a Mazda battery?

Q-85 is a Japanese size code for start-stop batteries. The letter gives the case size, here the same footprint as a D23L, and the number is a performance rating. A Q-85 can be replaced by a Q-85 or a higher-rated battery in the same case, such as Q-90 or Q-100, but not by a plain 55D23L if the car has i-stop.

Does a Mazda with i-ELOOP need a special battery?

It needs the same start-stop battery as other i-stop Mazdas, usually a Q-85. The i-ELOOP capacitor is a separate unit that stores braking energy and is not replaced with the battery. Mention it on the call so the technician knows before opening the bonnet.

Is Panasonic the right battery for a Mazda?

Panasonic is a good match because it makes the Q-85 and S-95 start-stop sizes that Japanese-built Mazdas were designed around. Amaron, Solite and Varta are sound choices too, provided the battery is a start-stop type in the same case. The technician brings what suits the car and you choose before it is fitted.
