Mitsubishi battery replacement in Al Taawun

Mitsubishi models take JIS batteries under the bonnet: a small B19 to B24 case on the Attrage, Xpander and Lancer, a D23 on the ASX and Outlander, and a D26 or D31 on the Pajero, Montero Sport and L200. Nothing needs coding on most of them. A technician can fit one where the car stands in Al Taawun, street bay or basement, at any hour.

Mitsubishi battery help around Al Taawun

Plenty of Lancers, Attrages and older Pajeros in Al Taawun live on the street, not in a tower basement. Evening spaces are scarce, residents talk about circling for 20 to 30 minutes, and once a spot is found the car may not move for days. It stands in full sun through July and August afternoons above 40 degrees. Paid zones run from 8am to midnight, and blue-sign bays charge all seven days, so a car that will not start still has to be paid for by SMS until it moves. A battery fitted at the kerb ends that quickly.

How the battery and charging system work on a Mitsubishi

Most Mitsubishis on Sharjah roads are straightforward machines: a belt-driven alternator, a conventional regulator and a flooded maintenance-free battery. That simplicity is part of why older Pajeros and Lancers keep going for so long. The newest Outlander is the change of direction. It shares a platform with Nissan, carries far more driver-assist electronics and, on some versions, has idle stop that calls for an EFB. Diesel L200 pickups need a battery with much higher cranking power than petrol ones, although both look identical from the driver's seat.

Signs a Mitsubishi battery is on its way out

  • A Pajero that cranks slowly only when hot, for example straight after a fuel stop, has a battery that has lost its cranking power to heat.
  • On the Attrage and Xpander the dash lights dim and the radio cuts out during cranking, then return once the engine catches.
  • A white or green crust on the positive terminal, common on cars parked near the lagoon, together with a starter that only clicks.

Mitsubishi battery sizes and types

The Attrage and Xpander use the smallest cases, normally NS40 or NS60 class with thin posts. The Lancer sits between sizes: 1.6 cars often carry an NS60, while 2.0 cars usually have a 55D23L. ASX and Outlander take a D23 in 55, 75 or 80 strength. Petrol Pajero and Montero Sport normally use an 80D26L, and diesel L200 and Pajero versions a 95D31. Year and engine shift all of these, so the label on the old battery has the final word.

What we watch for when fitting a Mitsubishi battery

  • After a disconnect, electronic-throttle Mitsubishis can idle low or stall at junctions until the engine computer relearns. A memory saver during the swap, or ten minutes of idling with everything switched off afterwards, sorts it.
  • Attrage and Xpander batteries have thin JIS posts. A larger battery with standard posts will not clamp up properly, so the replacement is matched like for like.
  • The Pajero's hold-down bar and J-hooks rust in coastal humidity. A seized hook is freed or replaced so the battery sits clamped, since a loose one shakes its plates apart.
  • Diesel L200 trucks often carry beacons, radios or chillers wired straight to the battery. Those extra leads go back on the correct post and are checked for drain.

Where the battery sits in a Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi puts the battery at the front of the engine bay on all of these models, clamped by a bar across the top. Pajero and L200 batteries are heavy and sit high, so the technician has to stand square to the wing to lift one out, and a car nosed tight against a basement wall may need to roll back half a metre. Attrage and Lancer are the opposite: a light battery within easy reach, and the whole job fits in the space of an open bonnet beside a busy kerb.

Mitsubishi battery replacement: FAQs

Do the petrol and diesel L200 use the same battery?

No. The diesel needs much more cranking current, so it normally takes a larger 95D31 while the petrol runs a D23 or D26. Fitting the petrol size to a diesel truck gives slow starts and a short battery life.

Why are the battery terminals on my Attrage thinner than on other cars?

Small JIS batteries, the B19, B20 and B24 cases, are normally built with thinner posts than larger sizes. The Attrage's cable clamps are made for those posts, so the replacement has to come from the same family. A battery with thick posts will not seat in the clamps properly.

Can you change the battery on my Lancer if it is parked on the street in a paid zone?

Yes. The technician stops alongside or nearby, works with the bonnet up, and is normally finished in under half an hour. Nothing has to be towed and you do not need to arrange access to a basement.

Will my Pajero lose its radio and clock settings when the battery is disconnected?

Not if a memory saver is used, and one is plugged in before the old battery comes off. It keeps a small supply to the car's electronics during the swap. If the battery was completely dead before the technician arrived, the clock may already have reset and simply needs setting again.
