Subaru battery replacement in Al Taawun
A Subaru takes a Japanese JIS battery, most often from the D23L family, and models with Auto Start Stop need a start-stop rated battery of the same size. Replacement is done where the car is parked in Al Taawun. The battery sits in plain view at the front of the engine bay, so testing and fitting are quick.

How the battery and charging system work on a Subaru
Subaru's flat boxer engine sits low and leaves the battery out in the open, but the electrical load is higher than the simple layout suggests. EyeSight cameras, permanent all-wheel drive control and, on newer cars, Auto Start Stop all depend on steady voltage. Start-stop Subarus use a JIS idling-stop battery and have a current sensor on the negative cable. There is no dealer registration step, but the engine computer does forget its idle settings when power is cut, so the idle may hunt slightly for the first few kilometres.
Signs a Subaru battery is on its way out
- The Auto Start Stop indicator shows the system as unavailable on every trip.
- EyeSight, stability control and hill-assist warnings come on together at start-up after the car has sat for a few days.
- Cranking sounds slower and more laboured than the usual quick boxer start, especially after a weekend parked.
Where the battery sits in a Subaru
On every current Subaru the battery is at a front corner of the engine bay, held by a simple bar clamp across the top, with nothing to remove first. That makes it one of the easiest cars to work on in a low basement, because the technician does not need the boot or the cabin. The only thing to watch is the clamp nuts, which seize with the humidity that comes off Khalid Lagoon. A little penetrating oil saves a snapped J-bolt. Clearance needed is just enough to lift the bonnet.
Subaru models we replace batteries for
Tap a model for its battery type, where it sits and what the swap involves.
Subaru ForesterThe Forester usually takes a D23L battery, and cars with Auto Start Stop need the Q-85 idling-stop type. Its EyeSight system throws warnings when voltage is low, so those lights often clear once a healthy battery is in.
Subaru XVAn XV uses a D23L case in most versions, with a start-stop rated battery on newer 2.0 litre cars. It is commonly used for short city trips, which is the pattern that leaves a battery half charged.
Subaru OutbackThe Outback carries the largest battery Subaru fits here, at the upper end of the D23L range, to feed heated seats, a power tailgate and a large screen. Do not accept a smaller one just because it fits the tray.
Subaru ImprezaImpreza models take a 55D23L-size battery or its start-stop equivalent. The tray and clamp are the same as the XV, so fitting is quick and the technician concentrates on testing the alternator output afterwards.
Subaru WRXA WRX is often fitted with extras such as gauges, alarms or an upgraded sound system, and those drain a parked car. It takes a D23L battery, and the technician checks the standing current draw if a new one has gone flat before.

What we watch for when fitting a Subaru battery
- Power windows lose their auto up and down after a disconnect. Each one is reset by holding the switch up for a second or two after the glass closes.
- The idle can sit slightly high or dip for the first drive while the engine computer relearns. It settles without any tool.
- The hold-down uses long J-bolts hooked into the tray. They are checked for rust and replaced if thin, because a loose battery shakes itself to an early end.
- On Auto Start Stop cars the sensor on the negative cable stays with the car. The new battery must be an idling-stop type or the system switches itself off.
Subaru battery sizes and types
Subaru sticks to JIS sizes. The common fitment on Impreza, XV, Forester and WRX is a D23L case, labelled anywhere from 55D23L to 75D23L, which works out at roughly 50 to 65 Ah. The six-cylinder Outback and cars with more equipment sit at the top of that range. Auto Start Stop models carry an idling-stop battery marked Q-85 in the same footprint. The terminal layout must match, since the cables have little slack. The technician checks the code printed on the fitted battery before choosing.

Subaru battery help around Al Taawun
A Subaru that spends the week in a tower basement and only comes out on Friday for Al Khan Beach, Al Mamzar or a longer run out of town has a harder life than it looks. Five days of sitting followed by one drive leaves the battery short of charge, and the humid, salty air beside the lagoon builds white crust on the terminals faster than it would inland. Owners often blame the starter when the real fault is corrosion and a half-charged battery. Cleaning the posts and testing takes a few minutes, and the test is free.
Subaru battery replacement: FAQs
What does Q-85 mean on my Subaru battery?
Q-85 is the JIS code for an idling-stop battery, built to handle the repeated restarts of Auto Start Stop. It has the same footprint as a D23 battery but a tougher plate design. If your Subaru came with one, the replacement must also be an idling-stop type.
Why are EyeSight warnings showing when the battery is low?
EyeSight and the stability systems check their supply voltage at start-up, and a weak battery lets it sag below what they accept. The car then switches them off and lights the warnings. If the lights go away after a long drive and return after parking, have the battery tested.
Will my Subaru idle strangely after a battery change?
It can for a short while. The engine computer loses its learned idle values when power is removed and rebuilds them over the first few kilometres. If the idle is still unsteady after a day of normal driving, call us and we will check it.
Can a European DIN battery be fitted to a Subaru?
It is not recommended. Subaru trays, clamps and cable lengths are made for the taller JIS case with posts on top, and a DIN battery sits lower with recessed posts that the cables may not reach properly. We fit the correct JIS size from Panasonic, Amaron or Solite, or Varta where it is made in the Asian case.
